2012 Spring 2: “Write, Direct, Produce!”

MODULE #2 of 2012 Leaders of Multimedia series

Spring 2: Write, Direct, Produce!

Develop your style. Design your own original film!

Students will discover their voice to share through film. “How to tell a story with pictures” is essential to the art of film making. Student writers will learn to refine their ideas, develop plot and characters and how to bring it to the page in a timeline like the professionals. Learning the proper technique prepares the ground for inspiration. This course will cover:

screenplay writing: structure, transitions, events, and through-lines
directing for the screen: script analysis, rehearsal, shoot-planning, professionalism
proper listening and talking to actors
story-boarding
Goffman Technique
weekly “dutch filmmaking” challenges
“pre-editing” with a director’s eye
the production and marketing of a “pitch video” to raise the funds for your film to be produced in the summer (your tuition).
production coordination: including design, budgeting, fundraising, scheduling, and casting

The student’s screenplays will culminate in a final performance in the form of a staged reading by actors and presentation of their IndieGoGo “pitch videos.” They will introduce their screenplay and have the opportunity to hear their words aloud and hear the audience respond to their work. Students will discover their voice through film and build confidence in sharing their ideas. All students have the opportunity to submit their film as a “treatment” to be considered for production this summer in the 2nd Annual HARA Short-Film Creation-Fest. {Click here for more information for Summer}

This class is open for 15 students.

Previously, this course was offered for $650 in 2011. Because of generous support from the Arts Council of Monterey County and the S.T.A.R Foundation, we can now offer our Spring and Summer sessions at a reduced rate.
