From the student’s exploration and creative collaboration from the Spring, 4-5 short films will be chosen to produce over Summer break. The whole process will be hands-on learning in the areas of pre-production, shooting the film, and editing. Each student will serve in all areas of production: producing, acting and crewing a short film. The unique experience and training will provide the students with tradable skills to create their own future film projects. Each film will be given the opportunity for online distribution and be given the privileged opportunity to represent the school in short film festivals locally and abroad.
Short Film Series II
Short Film Creation Fest: From Pre to Post Production
The Summer Program will consist of three sections. 1) training & pre-production, 2) shooting the movies on location, 3) post-production editing. Two weeks of pre-production is required of all students collaborating on the films for the summer. These two weeks are the only times that little or no conflicts will be accommodated. The rest of the summer will be determined by each film team’s schedules. We have outlined the dates, and depending on student’s schedules, we will create a master schedule for the film shoots.
1) Training & Pre-Production
June 14-17 and 21-24 at Carmel Youth Center 1pm-6pm These two weeks will cover: *Acting for the camera and the presence-building HARA Technique *Casting and collaborative script creation from the Spring storyboards *Film team collaboration: turning a storyboard into a schedule *Location Scouting as “pre-editing”, preparing for the film shoot *Production Value: Maximizing sound, image & effects quality
2) Short Film Shooting on location
week 1 : June 27-30, week 2: July 7-10, week 3: July 12-15 These three weeks will be organized and scheduled according to each team’s short film. Most conflicts can be accommodated. During the film shoots, each student director will work directly with Glynn Trolz, a paid professional cinematographer to capture their film with professional equipment and create a professional quality film. The directors and the film teams will focus on: *Making memorable shots *Visual Effects vs. Special Effects *Equipment comprehension & practice: the camera, boom, wireless mics (LAV’s), lights, C-stands, bounce-boards, electrics *Playing with time and managing the pace of the shoot
3) Post-Production Instruction
week 1: July 18-21, week 2 : July 25-28, week 3: August 1-4 These three weeks all student film teams will collaborate on times required to assist the directors in editing the films. All conflicts can be accommodated except for the directors. The teams will work closely with our faculty to assist them in all post-production instruction using final-cut studio. Computers will be provided but hard-drives will not. These three weeks will cover: * How to cut like a pro *Manufacturing “reality” *Invisible cuts *Pacing *Sound and music *Color-correcting *Order of operations and Onlining in Non-Linear Editing
*August 6th is a scheduled class preview of the first rough-cut of the films
