Monterey High School Players and HARA Motion Pictures will premiere a documentary on the making of a play, The Merchant at Monterey High. On Friday, January 16 at 7:30pm at Monterey Peninsula College, Lecture Forum Room 103 to celebrate classical theatre by high-caliber Monterey High School youth.
Shakespeares The Merchant of Venice is being presented from a fresh new perspective. Twenty six scenes of the MHS 2012 stage production, from the eyes of ambitious 9th to 12th grade high school students, will learn to master this classical text from the cold reading to the final performance. From the audition to the closing night performance, a documentary crew captured every dramatic moment of what its like to be an actor in a stage production at Monterey High School. For the thousands of actors who have gone through the drama program under the direction of Larry Welch (and the parents who have supported them) this film is for them.
Cinematographer and Editor, Michael Buffo commented saying, Its the film every theatre company wishes they would make. This has been a dream of Larrys for 20 years and after two years of editing, I could not be more proud of the potential this film has for inspiring our community. Director Larry Welch designed the concept of the film to show local viewers what its like to be on the journey of making a high school play. Driven by the comedy of watching these kids take his sometimes nutty direction and the drama of doing their best to meet his high performance standards, this is a film that simply cant be paused. Once it starts, Buffo added, you will be gripped by the actors courage, the legendary directors lessons on acting, and the steady stream of theatrical surprises!
